Vlisco, I love you

Standard

I’ve long had an obsession with African fabrics.  The bold, bright patterns and colors are completely entrancing to me.  I am in the process of adding more African wax prints into the offerings at WomanShopsWorld.  And in my research and obsession over these bold beauties, I have fallen into the tunnel of Vlisco.  Talk about bold and beautiful!  Vlisco has been designing dutch wax prints for the African and West African market since 1846, so they’ve had some time to perfect their designs.  And perfection they have achieved.  These fabrics are high-fashion, for the affluent woman who wants to make her mark.  Watch this video from one of their past summer collections and tell me you haven’t fallen in love…

And with this, I’m off to search for more wax prints!

Wisdom Eyes

Standard

Image Nepal, all Buddist stupas (shrines) have a set of Buddha eyes on all four sides of the main tower.  Also called Wisdom Eyes, the eyes face in all four directions, reminding all of the Buddha’s omnipresence.  The curly symbol between the eyes represents the number 1, and the unity of all things.

We were given this Buddha Eyes sticker by our Nepali exporter.  Today Buddha’s eyes found a new home on the windshield of “The Mothership” (as Aveesh calls our box truck).  We’re en route to Chicago for the Randolph Street Market, and the sunset was cotton-candy glow tonight.  I had my camera nearby and captured this end-of-day photo.  A good reminder of the peace, calm, and simple beauty that surrounds us always, if we are willing to take the time to notice.

Blog Lovin’ from Chicago’s Randolph Street Market

Standard

We are having so much fun with the antique shows that we can’t seem to take a weekend off!  This weekend we’re at Trade Days in McCalla, AL.  It’s set in the midst of Tannehill State Park, with a lovely little drive through the woods.  Then you drive over a precious little bridge (Which almost felt too small for our truck!), into a field full of tents and the hawkers’ offerings.  We do feel like there are a lot of “flea-market finds” and not so many antiques here, but that’s just fine with us.  As long as the crowd is there, we will have fun making people smile with all of our fabulous color and worldly goods.

So if you’re in the Birmingham area, come by and say hello.  Here is the address.   We’ll be there all day today and tomorrow (from early morning until 5pm).

Next weekend we’re heading to the Windy City, and we can’t wait!  The Randolph Street Market looks incredible.  I have a feeling I might have a hard time keeping my money in my pocket at this fabulous market.

They were so excited when we sent in our application!  One look at our colors, and I got such an exciting e-mail back, welcoming us to the market.  And look at this blog lovin’, all about WomanShopsWorld: http://randolphstreetmarket.com/newsarticle.php?p=1&a=152 .  Thanks Randolph Street Market, I think I love you already!

Jingle Magic

Standard

Jingle, jingle.  Do you hear the bells?  I hereby officially announce that I have returned to my hippie roots.  I’m wearing bells.   I sound like your dog, but I can’t get enough of the sound.  I’m not sure what it is about bells that I’m so entranced by, but I’ve been a bell lover all my life.

As I told you in my last post, we just got our first shipment of Nepali goods.  There are so many amazing treasures inside the box that I can hardly stand it.  And among the treasures are necklaces made from Sari silk, with dangling brass Indian bells.  They are handmade by our friend in Nepal.  The jingle on these bells is so clear, but so subtle at the same time.  And the fraying of the sari silk is very magical to me, reminds me of the Prayer flags that fly in the Himalayas, carrying prayers on the wind.
In India, these bells would be worn by pregnant mothers while they carry their baby.  The infant associates the sound of the bell with its mother.  After birth, the sound of the bell lets the baby know that its mother is near.  Beautiful!

In addition to the Indian bells, I’ve also been wearing a vintage African brass bell in this bracelet that I’ve called India, Meet Africa.  The gentle sound that comes from this bell is so sweet.
So that’s my jingle for today.  Do you like bells?  Share your jingle magic with me.

The boxes are arriving!

Things are moving and shaking in the land of WomanShopsWorld.  I have always been a shopper.  No matter where I go, I can’t help but look for the colorful and unusual to add to my collection.  And I’ve always been told I have a good eye.  A good eye for color and patterns, and a good vision for what to do with things.  I find that I can often see the magic potential in something when others just see a scrap of fabric.  I’m also a real believer in letting the universe guide me where I need to go.  So I’m pretty ecstatic with the direction in which this Woman Shopping the World is heading!

All of this started with my opening an etsy shop about a year and a half ago, where I started selling African beads. Then I discovered some vintage African fabrics, so added those too. After a few trips to India and making more new discoveries, I decided there was much more that I needed to be sharing.  Add some ribbons and trims, and some natural Indian beads to the offering.  Over the past few months, I’ve been doing more shows with my worldly goods, and realize that this is way more exciting, fulfilling, and fun than the bead shows I’m used to.   So throw in a few Thai pompoms and embroidered textiles, hair ponies and bags, and the mix is getting even more colorful!  Add some Nepali clothes and accessories, some Rajasthani embroidered umbrellas, and some patchworked Banjara bags, and you’ve got yourself a bazaar.  And that’s pretty much where we are.  I like to think of it as a traveling boho emporium.  And lucky for you, I think this show is just getting started.

Scott’s Antique Market  (Atlanta, GA) is next weekend, and my offerings are growing by the day!  Here are some pictures of me opening our shipment of Nepali goods that came yesterday.  If colorful and boho is your style, follow this leader.  We’re going good places!  More pictures to come as more goods arrive.

We’re off to Cincinnati this weekend for the Intergalactic Bead & Jewelry Show.  It’s all about beads this weekend, but come next Wednesday I’ll be setting up the best booth at Scott’s, full of WomanShopsWorld bounty!

Until next time~

Oh, etsy, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways

Standard

Sorry for my silence, dear readers.  I have fallen down the etsy tunnel, and I can’t get out!  I’ve been on a treasury-creating kick, and it’s lead me to stumble upon some of the most amazing etsy finds. I’ve hardly had time for anything else because I can’t seem to pry myself off of the computer.  From hand-dyed ombre silk fashion finds, to boho-inspired home goods, I want to design my entire life with items from etsy.   Handmade by the artist down the street, or handmade by a woman half-way around the world, etsy’s got it all!  Here are a few of my current obsessions:

Ombre and Pastel Current Etsy Favorites

Etsy is such an inspiration to me in so many ways.  I love to see so many people making and doing what they love!  I also been hard at work, building my  WomanShopsWorld empire!  I haven’t really been on etsy 24 hours a day, I promise!  I’ve got some super-bright and fun new shipments arriving daily, from various corners of the world.  We’ve got the next Scott’s market coming up in 2 weeks, and if you thought the booth looked good before, wait until you see it in July!  I cannot wait to reveal my newest treasures.  Some of my finds will also be for sale on WomanShopsWorld, but some will go in a new shop I am working on outside of etsy.  In respect to etsy’s rule that all items be handmade by the shop owner, vintage, or supplies, I have lots of goodies that I can’t sell on etsy.  I respect this rule 100% and am a believer that it is what will keep etsy from turning into ebay (or we can hope!)  So stay tuned for new goods, new sites, and more inspiration.Stay cool out there, it’s a scorcher today!
